Find out about how to get your oily complexion under control & how young should you start preventing wrinkles?

What products will help get my oily complexion under control?

Rodan + Fields offers UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20, a lightweight formula that protects and mattifies skin for a fresh, healthy-looking complexion. Physical sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays that can lead to sun damage, post-acne marks and uneven skin tone. Featuring Azelosome, this non-comedogenic formula controls excess oil production to help prevent clogged pores. Antioxidants and botanicals work to brighten, protect and soothe skin. Use as part of the UNBLEMISH Regimen for best results.

We also offer UNBLEMISH Blot Papers with Zincidone on specially treated Japanese rice paper, clinically proven to immediately reduce surface oil by 84% and reduce oil production over time by 21%. In fact, this product received Allure magazine’s Best of Beauty award. Gently press the lightly powdered side against the face, concentrating on areas with excess oil. Repeat with a fresh paper as often as necessary.

Is 20 too young to start using your ANTI-AGE Regimen and the Multi-Function Eye Cream?

As we grow older, our skin’s inherent anti-aging mechanisms diminish: defenses weaken, critical processes slow and the rate of breakdown accelerates. In the Doctors’  medical practices, they constantly see the need for a daily skincare regimen that replenishes or restores what’s lacking and prevents or interrupts the aging process.

To address this need, Rodan + Fields offers its ANTI–AGE Regimen which takes proven pharmaceutical science and applies it to the prevention and correction of the visible signs of skin aging. By strategically incorporating anti-aging peptides, this daily system works on multiple skin levels to address the key causes of skin aging: decreased cell turnover, diminished collagen production, dryness and the cumulative effects of environmental damage.

So begin today. No matter how old you are, it’s never too soon (or too late) to start ensuring a healthy, youthful-looking future for your skin.

The 101 of the Skin You're In

The skin is the largest organ of the body and yet most of us don't do enough to maintain our skin’s health. Americans spend millions on body products every month, but are they buying the right ones? How much do you really know about what your skin needs, what type of skin you have, what kind of soaps and lotions are the best for your skin? What about those products that promise younger-looking, wrinkle-free skin, do they work?

One of your skin’s functions is to eliminate a portion of the body's waste products through sweating. If toxins escape through the skin they disrupt the skin's health integrity. This is one of the key factors behind many skin disorders including acne. The skin also "breathes". If the pores become clogged, the microbes that are involved in causing acne flourish.

Great looking skin is a wonderful thing to have because it's right there on your face, it's kind of hard to hide. The skin also protects our bodies from the outside world. Most of us don't think our skin is so great looking. Even if you were born with a perfect complexion, or one that is not so good, you should make an effort to take care of it correctly. When you are going through adolescence, your body is trying to adjust to changes in the hormone balance, and this affects your skin big time.

Every skin care regimen is designed to work in conjunction with ALL of its parts and pieces.  If you leave a piece out...you get a "swiss cheese affect"...lots of wholes in the system!  Take the time to discuss with your dermatologist or your personal consultant...every time you have a question or when your skin changes.  Keep in mind that you should expect to see a change as the seasons do and for women cyclically, as well!

Where you live...or visit...MATTERS!

By Dr. Kathy Fields

Between visiting family in both Chicago and Florida, business travel across the country, and upcoming college campus visits, I practically live in my suitcase. I am constantly unpacking and repacking clothes, shoes, toiletries and skincare for different locales. And when it comes to what has become almost a weekly routine, this derm’s confession: I’m a slave to my pores. Wherever I travel throughout the country, my priority is keeping my pores happy, regardless of climate. So I cater to them each and every day.

  • When jet setting to Miami during the hot, humid summers, I pack a clay-based cleansing mask to unclog pores; an oil-free mattifying sunscreen and oil-blotting papers to reduce oil on-the-go.
  • When I travel to Chicago during the cold, dry winters, my focus changes to miniaturization (if skin gets too dry it will start creating excess oil, leading to clogged, enlarged pores). I bring a heavy moisturizer to apply on damp skin after showering to lock in moisture.
Regardless of where I am, my daily routine always includes a product containing hydroxy-acids to keep my pores clear, and retinol to fortify my skin structure so my pores stay tight and younger looking.

This may seem like a lot to go through, but at the end of the day it’s all worth it to look as young as you feel. Skin is a beautiful thing … wear it well.

Beauty Tips for Every Woman and Man

  1. Eat better. Eat foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fats—like berries, avocados, and fish. Steer clear of foods that are heavy with simple carbohydrates, sugars, starches, and salt. Drink water, cut slices of any citrus fruit and let them soak, this will be an infused peace of freshness during your day.
  2. If applying makeup, do it in good lighting (preferably natural lighting). Wear a shade of foundation that matches your natural skin color exactly. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a mask.
  3. But remember, even a sunscreen or tinted moisturizer needs to be removed before bed, with a make-up remover before your cleansing regimen.
  4. Commit to a skincare regimen. Determine what type of skin you have and follow a regimen for which it is suited.
  5. Protect your skin with an SPF. An SPF of 15, using a physical and chemical sunscreen will give you the benefit of both UVA and UVB protection from the sun and against the environmental chemicals for day to day.  If you will be in the sun more than to and from the car, protect yourself with an SPF of 30 or above, and also schedule your first skin cancer screening as soon as possible.
  6. Put down the remote and get moving. Zoning out in front of the couch isn’t going to destroy your skin, but engaging in activity will get your blood circulating—and that always brings out the best in your skin.
  7. Lessen your caffeine intake. Most of us couldn’t make it through the day without a cup of coffee, and we’d be hypocrites if we told you to stop drinking it cold turkey. However, if you gradually cut back your intake of coffee you will notice an improvement in your skin. Even better: switch to caffeinated teas, such as green teas, which are rich in antioxidants and help fight free radicals in your skin.
  8. If you can’t get enough sleep at night, try power napping. Twenty minutes of napping or resting after you get off work will re-energize you completely for your evening activities. Even if you aren’t sleeping, at least your body is at rest. Make quiet-time mandatory.
  9. Schedule a spa day, even if it’s one you do at home. Taking time out to get in tune with your body and spend time on a beautifying routine is relaxing. Pedicures, facials, manicures, hair restorative treatments—whether you do them at a salon or at home—all have a rejuvenating effect on the body.
  10. Share yourself; letting someone who you can trust into your life and sharing your life with them is essential to being a healthy person.  We all need to share ourselves and have others share with us!
No one can deny the self confidence booster, the power that exudes from us when our skin is looking and feeling good!  A canvas for beautiful makeup or a reason to toss out the make-up that you no longer are enslaved to!

[New post] Common Questions

I get these little white bumps over my cheeks when I use my scrubs. Why do I break out?

We are the first to say that exfoliation is a key to looking younger, but it is possible to get too much of a good thing. Being too aggressive can remove the protective barrier of the skin and begin a cascade of irritation.

The skin has a delicate lipid barrier that holds in moisture and keeps out irritants. If this barrier is distressed from too much exfoliation, it will alert you by appearing dry, feeling tight, and becoming red/rashy. Small fissures can form and allow bacteria and toxins in that irritate skin. Small white “milia” bumps appear as a result of the skin forming a cocoon around bacteria and toxins.

Initially, exfoliation is tricky. There should be enough cells shed to signal skin renewal but not so many that the skin becomes dry, tight or irritated. The secret is not to overdo it. If your skin looks red and angry, becomes painful or sensitive, or you see small white “pimples” after exfoliation, give it a rest and use a bland cleanser, hydrocortisone 1% and moisturizer for a few days while your skin recovers.

My face is so oily that I wash it three to four times a day. How many times a day can I wash it?

Washing your face more than twice a day to remove excess oil will eventually cause an increase in oil production due to a rebound phenomenon, making your skin more sensitive. A better approach is to use UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 to protect and mattify skin for a fresh, healthy-looking complexion. And to blot away surface shine throughout the day, use UNBLEMISH  Blot Papers with Zincidone™.

Directions for Clearing out those Pesky Pores using R+F

  1. Using Reverse Exfoliating Wash on damp (wet face with fingers then blot dry) use the whole length of your fingers to apply the product, let the product gently roll over the skin, unblocking the pores.
  2. Apply Anti-Age Gentle Exfoliating Wash as a mask, remember to never go further than the orbital bone with any product, as this could cause eye irritation.  Wait 10-15 mins, dampen skin and gently massage using the above method for 30 seconds, rinse well with warm water.  Do this only 2-3 times a week, depending on skin sensitivity!
  3. Use your toner of choice, to ready skin to take in products that follow.
  4. Use your 3rd step of choice, depending on your current regimen.  This may change seasonally, as the weather and hormones play a big role in the needs of our skin!
  5. Don't forget your Anti-Age Multi-Function Eye Cream ;)  Put it in the fridge this time of year for an added boost of comfort, but never put this in your freezer!
  6. If your 3rd step was not your sunscreen...Use it know for a polished, youthful glow!

Stripping Your Face???

Using an astringent with a high percentage of alcohol to get that “deep clean” feeling is actually hurting your skin!

Unfortunately, these harsh astringents remove much more than dirt and oil from your face. They will also strip the skin of essential moisture, compromising the barrier.

In response, your skin actually produces MORE oil to compensate for the dryness and the vicious cycle never ends. We recommend using a treatment toner containing beneficial ingredients like salicylic acid to gently clean pores while protecting your delicate moisture barrier.

Remember, be gentle to your skin...using only hands or 100% clothes or gauze to apply products.  Do not grind those "trouble spots" with finger-tips or other harsh items.  Use the length of your fingers to gently move the products around your skins surface!

Stay tuned for more tips to help you to learn to love the skin you're in.

I Can’t Live Without My …

Ok, hypothetically speaking, we are stranded on a deserted island and I can have three things with me...
  • My toothbrush
  • My Reverse Deep Exfoliating Wash
  • My Night Renewing Serum ~ aka The Little Blue Men:)
Why these things...well the toothbrush speaks for itself, but if you haven't tried Rodan + Fields Dermatologists Signature Line of products yet...you DO NOT know what you are missing.  I can't represent a product that doesn't WOW me, I am a doubting Tomasina, and need to be "shell-shocked" to share!  But once I am, I find it impossible to shut up!

These two products will increase your collagen production (plumping up the skin...wrinkles become more shallow or disappear) and resurface your skins texture (pores will look less defined and your skin will look visibly brightened)!  For an even better result, the toner and lightening cream that come with the regimen, will also erase your skin damage (those pesky "freckles" that have become more like patches) will begin to fall apart and fade.
Seal the Deal with the oil-free sunscreen to protecting your investment and look radiant and flawless with its optical-diffusers and sheer presentation!

Are you ready to expect a lot MORE from your skin care?  Yes!  Then contact me today...you only have GREAT SKIN to WIN!

For your Teens and tweens

Skin care 101

Your skin is just one more thing that changes when you go through puberty. Acne often starts in your early teen years because your body is making more oil glands, which is normal. A few different skin problems are a part of acne: whiteheads, blackheads, and cystic acne.

  1. Whiteheads are made when a hair follicle (root) is plugged with oil and skin cells.
  2. If this plugged up stuff comes up to the surface of the skin and the air touches it, it turns black and becomes a blackhead. So, blackheads are not caused by dirt.
  3. If a plugged follicle breaks, the area swells and becomes a red bump. If this happens close to the surface of the skin, the bump most often becomes a pimple. If it breaks deep inside in the skin, nodules or cysts can form, which can look like larger pimples. This is cystic acne.

Acne is common among teens, but not everyone will have the same troubles. It may be worse in boys because they have more oils in their skin. Also, it can run in the family. If your mother or father had bad acne, the same may happen for you. Some people also just have more sensitive skin, yes, acne is part of sensitive skin, too!

How is acne treated?

First, wash your face regularly, twice a day. Beginning to take care of your skin before issues are present is the best course but if this is just the start, don't waste time trying to hide from it!  Attack it with the proper guidelines!  If the acne does not go away, there are over-the-counter products (you can buy these without a doctor’s order) available in different forms, such as gels, lotions, creams, and soaps. Common ingredients used in these products to fight acne are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and sulfur. Use these on a small area to make sure you do not have a skin reaction (you don't want something worse to happen)! Also, it can take time for these products to work, often 2-3 weeks. If they do not make your acne better after two months, try another product with a different active ingredient. Remember these tips:

  1. Always remove your makeup before you go to bed, with a makeup remover designed for the type your wear daily, even a sunscreen needs to be removed!
  2. Treat acne gently, never scrub your skin, not even with a washcloth, this will cause tiny scratches (fissures) that will allow the bacteria to go into, creating more pimples!  Of course, this would also mean NOT to pick them either, this would allow the bacteria to spread, too!
  3. Always use non-comedogenic products, these will never clog your skin;)
  4. Sunscreen is essential, look for one that is oil-free.
  5. Another word of caution: the medicine isotretinoin (the product is called Accutane) can cause birth defects and miscarriages (losing a baby while pregnant) if taken when a woman is pregnant.

What can make acne worse?

  • oil-based make-up, suntan oil, hair gels, and sprays
  • stress
  • your period
  • getting too much sun

What doesn’t cause acne?

Dirt, fried foods or chocolate do not cause acne. These are myths!

Not all clay is created equal...

Kaolin clay is a white, natural, mineral-rich powder that draws oil from your pores while ridding the skin of dead cells and dirt, leaving skin softer to the touch. Some believe it can increase localized circulation and contribute to fighting inflammation of the skin.

You can find pore-refining kaolin clay in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash. For extra pore-cleansing and skin-smoothing benefits, use ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash as a daily or weekly cleansing mask.  Apply to dry skin with wet fingertips, allow to dry completely and rinse thoroughly, and follow-up with that important 2nd step!

It's a process...either way!

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” -Alvin Toffler

This quote is true for any job, but seems especially pertinent to life as I now know it at a start-up. It’s exciting, relentless, demanding, energizing. Ok, we never sleep, especially Lori, and we are all in it together. For me the biggest factor in startup mode is flexibility and continuous learning. Why – because not everything works as planned.

And rather than look back or complain, the thing that’s worked for me is to learn, adjust, double my efforts and move forward. It’s a process but, I always keep my goal, my why, in sharp focus and I know I’m better off for it.

The Core of the Pore Issue

By Dr. Katie Rodan

Patient Name: Julie*

Gender: Female

Age: 54 years old

Concern: pores

Doctor’s Notes:

I saw Julie, a new patient, last week; she was very concerned with her pores because this problem was new to her and appeared very quickly. Julie said she had always been very diligent and involved with her skincare. She stays out of the sun, follows a daily anti-aging routine, and even gets Botox injections every few months. And it shows; she had very few lines and wrinkles.

But her pores were large and distracting. And I can understand her frustration; it’s hard to invest time doing what you think is right only to be confronted with yet another skin concern. Had she realized the importance of treating her pores early on, as she did with preventing lines and wrinkles, I wouldn’t have even needed to meet with her. But Julie focused on lines and wrinkles and ignored her pores until her mirror showed that her pores demanded attention. She’s not alone in this—it happens to a lot of people. And that’s because pores are tricky; most people think of them only as a teenage concern and therefore don’t give them a second thought until they appear larger than life on their faces. Once they’re large you can’t shrink them physically—you can only minimize their appearance.

When I saw Julie, her pores were quite visible and our best option to minimize their appearance was to use laser therapy, a very expensive procedure that will ever so slightly reduce the size of her pores. This was disappointing news to deliver.

There is hope, learn from Julie’s mistakes and start on a pore-focused routine early to prevent your pores from expanding in the first place. The best pore-focused skincare you can start incorporating is a clay-based cleansing mask. Apply it one to three times a week for approximately two minutes, or until dry, then gently rinse with lukewarm water. This will clean out your pores and keep them small and tight. This extra step doesn’t require much time and it will give you great results. When it comes to pores, at-home solutions early on make all the difference.

411 for Frequently Asked Questions

Can you explain why it looks like I have more blackheads when I use UNBLEMISH Regimen?

When the dead skin cells and oil stagnate in pores, they turn from a light grey to black as the oil oxidizes. If your skin appears to have more blackheads, don’t be alarmed. UNBLEMISH Spot Fading Toner contains hydroquinone that may stain and accentuate these plugs. As the acne fighting medicines clear the plugs, the pores will become less noticeable.

A quick fix is to use the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash as a 10 minute pore-clearing mask on dry skin three times a week.

You may wish to consult with a dermatologist or aesthetician to extract stubborn blackheads.

I heard that you can use the ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash as a mask. How much do I use and how long do I leave it on my skin?

We recommend using ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash as a mask three times per week. Wet fingertips and massage a quarter-sized amount of product onto dry skin.  Cover the entire face with a thin coat of product, avoiding contact with the eyes. Allow product to dry completely.  Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry. Apply your remaining skincare products.

Extractions A-Go-Go

People who suffer from acne and blackheads often think that frequent extractions are the answer. While extractions can be effective, getting extractions too often can make your pores appear larger due to the inflammation associated with constant squeezing and prodding.  We recommend using a daily skincare routine to combat blackheads and only resorting to extractions when absolutely necessary.

[New post] Common Questions

My pores look suddenly enormous. How can I shrink them?

Enlarged pores, especially visible on the cheeks and nose, are a common cosmetic concern for both men and women. Why do they appear larger as we age?

Pores are more obvious when they contain grey oxidized oil. Removing this sebum will make pores appear smaller temporarily, but once removed, sebum will naturally reform within one day. Did you know that we need sebum to naturally coat the inside of a pore and provide a protective film over the surface as a lipid barrier? This protects skin from environmental dehydration and assault from bacteria and toxins.

Pores widen with age. Collagen supports pore walls so they are long and more slender. Unfortunately, as we age collagen production decreases and pore walls slacken and become wide and flat, which enables them to fill with more oils and dead skin.

Best tips: Keep pores as clean as possible with gentle exfoliation and medicines to clear pores. Boost your natural collagen production to increase pore support.

Why is my gauze pad dark and dirty just after cleansing my skin?

Medical-grade gauze is an aesthetician and dermatologist favorite because it deposits more liquid on skin than cotton balls or squares.  Gauze provides an extra bonus of micro-exfoliating to gently slough off dry skin cells. The dirt you see is usually dead skin cells.

Pores 101

When it comes to aging, we tend to focus on usual suspects such as lines and wrinkles. We ignore our pores until one day, seemingly out of nowhere, there they are … big, gaping holes occupying prime real estate on our faces. In fact, the most common complaint of Dr. Rodan’s and Dr. Fields’ 30-something and older patients is, “I hate my pores.” The cause? A weakening of the support structure that keeps pores tight and less visible in young skin (as seen below).

As we age, the skin structure slackens due to loss of collagen and elastin and as a result, pores “flop” open appearing larger and more noticeable.  While you can never change the physical size of your pores, you can minimize their appearance with the right skincare. This month at Derm RF, we’re focusing on pores—the best ways to visibly reduce them by using the right ingredients and practicing the best lifestyle habits today so your pores stay clear and tight as you age. Stay tuned for all this and more. As always, we love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

Sweating...don't stew in it!

Exercise is great and we encourage you to get lots of it … but we also encourage you to immediately shed your sweaty clothes when you are finished exercising. Staying in your hot, moist gym attire or golf shirt creates an environment where acne thrives and flourishes. We recommend cleansing immediately after exercising with a medicated body wash to help keep skin fresh and clear.  Your face needs the same attention, daily, to get the environmental "pollution" off your skin, as well!!!
